Personal Background:

I was born in Fort Worth and graduated from Arlington Heights High School, Texas Christian University (B.B.A.) and the University of Houston (JD).  I have been married to Cynthia (Chandler) Heard for over 49 years.  I served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, entering as a Seaman Recruit and exiting four years later as a Lieutenant.   While in the Navy, I was stationed at the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) inside the Cheyenne Mountain, where I served as the Chief of the Exercise Branch (war games) of the Space Defense Center.  I was awarded the Joint Services Commendation Medal for meritorious service.

I have served as a Director for the Tarrant County Hospital District through appointment by Sen. Mike Moncrief and am an approved attorney for several Title Insurance Companies.  I am presently or have been a member in good standing of the following organizations:

Professional Background:

I received my Bachelor of Business Administration degree from TCU with my concentrations being in economics and finance.  Upon completion of my Navy service, I entered the University of Houston Law School, where I completed the three year curriculum in twenty-seven months.  After receiving special dispensation from the Dean of the Law School and the President of the State Bar of Texas, I was permitted to take the Bar exam prior to graduation (while carrying an overload of courses), passed same and was admitted to practice before I actually graduated from law school.  While in law school I was accepted to The Order of the Barons, which is the Law School’s highest academic society.

Two weeks following graduation, I accepted a position with the Fort Worth law firm of Wilson, McGee & Craig.  This law firm had an extensive tax and general business practice and I practiced in the commercial areas, including real estate, federal regulatory matters, mergers and acquisitions, commercial lending and general corporate representation.  In due course I was made a partner.  After six years, I left this firm to join Frank Hill for the express purpose of forming a national quality law firm headquartered in Arlington to service the Metroplex.  I was the head of the Business and Real Estate Section of the firm and was its Managing Director.  The Hill Heard firm was successful by any standard and grew from the two of us to become the fifth largest law firm in Tarrant County with thirty lawyers.  After 15 years, I left the Hill Heard firm to continue my practice in Fort Worth.  David A. Wright joined my lawfim and the name was changed to Heard & Wright, P.C.  I continue to be a principal owner and Senior Partner in the firm of Heard & Wright.

I presently hold the highest Martindale-Hubble ratings for ability and ethics (excellent to preeminent and highest ethical standard).  I was selected by my peers as one of  Tarrant County’s Top Attorney’s as reported, 2004, edition of Fort Worth Magazine.  I had the good fortune to appear as a contestant on the TV quiz show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire".

Commercial Real Estate

One of our principal focuses is on commercial real estate transactions. We regularly handle purchase and sale, leasing, 1031 exchanges, title issues, development, financing and structure of transactions, and more. We are adept at handling transactions involving everything from strip malls and shopping centers to agricultural land, including farms and ranches.  Dwight Heard previously served as general counsel for one of the largest banks in Tarrant County. This means that we understand banking in the context of real estate. We know how to employ sophisticated devices such as wraparound transactions, and we know how to create structured transactions with multiple lenders. Ultimately, our role is to understand what our client wants to accomplish with the transaction and find the most appropriate method for doing so.

When handling a real estate transaction, we take care to ensure that nothing is overlooked. We will get surveys and analyze as necessary, to make certain there is no encroaching on a neighbor's land. We can also help with oil and gas interests, water rights, and much more. We do not simply handle the documentation. We review every aspect of a proposed transaction to make certain it is handled the right way. If disputes arise during the purchase or sale of commercial real estate, we have the ability to address them.

Probate and Estate Administration

We handle probate and all other estate administration tasks, including trust administration. Our goal is to minimize the stress of this process on behalf of our clients, taking care to understand the extent of the estate and to see that it is divided according to the decedent's wishes. When estate disputes arise, we are prepared to address them.  Incliuded among these services are Judicial Heirship Determination Proceedings.

We employ estate planning tools such as:
                                Revocable and irrevocable trusts
                                Powers of attorney
                                Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements
